HINARI Access to Research Initiative

The HINARI Programme, set up by WHO together with major publishers, enables developing countries to gain access to one of the world’s largest collections of biomedical and health literature. Over 6400 journal titles are now available to health institutions in 108 countries, areas and territories benefiting many thousands of health workers and researchers, and in turn, contributing to improved world health.

NEWS Influenza Evidence-based Information Portal: Free from EBSCO Publishing Due to Pandemic H1N1 Influenza and concerns about the 2009/2010 flu season, HINARI partner EBSCO Publishing has made key influenza information from DynaMedâ„¢, Nursing Reference Centerâ„¢ (NRC) and Patient Education Reference Centerâ„¢ (PERC) freely available to health care providers worldwide. This Influenza site includes more than 50 evidence-based topics including patient education information in 17 languages. The information is designed to inform patients and their families and provide information to clinicians to help them with H1N1 diagnosis and H1N1 treatment by making up-to-date diagnosis and treatment information available. The resources being made available will also provide up-to-date information about the H1N1 vaccine. The editorial teams will monitor the research and update these resources continuously throughout the flu season. :: Access the Influenza Evidence-based Information Portal PubMed® Redesign and HINARI Training Modules The HINARI Trainers’ Team has updated several of the Training Modules to reflect the redesign of the PubMed website. Modules 4.1 (PubMed Website Interface), 4.2 (Limits and Advanced Search) and 4.4 (PubMed History, Access to Full-Text Articles) and the Short Course have been significantly changed. You can access these revised documents from the HINARI training page. Please view these modules to learn about the changes and also send the information to your users and colleagues. The National Library of Medicine (NLM) has developed a redesign of the PubMed interface. While retaining all the original functionality, the PubMed homepage has been streamlined, requiring less effort to find resources. The Limits, Preview/Index, History and Details tabs’ features have been consolidated in Advanced Search. The revised homepage includes an NCBI Header, Search Bar, and Footer with links to many NCBA resources that are common to all PubMed pages. The NCBI Header includes an NCBI Resources drop down menu categorized by Topic, a How To menu, and the Sign In for My NCBI. The Search Bar retains the database selection menu, and includes a link to Advanced Search and Help. Additional Search bar selections, RSS and Save search, display after running a PubMed search. The Go button is now the Search button. :: Adapted from NLM Technical Bulletin publication 19 October 2009 Managing Bibliographic References We have added a new training module – 5.0 EndNoteWeb. Accessible from the ‘Databases and Article Searching’ drop down menu, this reference management tool enables you to save citations in a variety of formats that conform to the specifications for journal publications and dissertations. The training module summarizes the registration process, how to collect, organize and format saved citations and how to export citations from PubMed. :: Module 5. TIP OF THE MONTH FOR USING HINARI Access Problems – Firewalls and Access to Proxy Servers Periodically, the HINARI staff receives access problems reports. Many times this is an issue that we can help you resolve (incorrect username and password, or a problem at a publisher’s site.) We are seeing an increasing number of reports where the problem reported actually originates at your own institution. Mostly commonly, a problem at your institution occurs when a proxy server is blocked by a newly installed institution firewall on your network. If you know that your institution is upgrading or securing its network, please check with your computer department to make sure the institution’s firewall does not block proxy servers. The computer system must be able to access HINARI’s proxy server in order for you to login to HINARI. Ensure that you are permitted access to the HINARI login URL through your institution’s firewall. Without this permission, you will see error messages from HINARI, and will not be able to login properly and access HINARI’s full-text articles. Contact the HINARI team (hinari@who.int) if your computer department needs more explicit information for the firewall permission. This is a step-by-step review to identify why you do not have access to HINARI and full-text articles. FEEDBACK FROM USERS «I have been using HINARI manually for the last couple of years. I was only using the Elsevier science publisher. After the training I felt I was using only less than 1% of the publications which are provided by WHO and other helpful organizations for us living and practicing science in the developing nations. Previously, I was almost wasting my time as I was supposed to read all unrelated publication in order to reach my specific and relevant articles. The training was fortunate for me and other colleagues, who had the chance of attending this fruitful and friendly training on how to use the HINARI, for the health, and other important websites for other fields.
